Why Do Women In Their 50's and 60's Feel Most Confident In Their Appearance?

Writer's picture: We Love BeautyWe Love Beauty

When we look in the mirror we see that each year brings it's body and face challenges but the latest news is that women feel the most confident about their appearance in their 60's.

Over the years I think we've all wanted to hold on to our youthful looks but I can see women over 50 have more and more confidence. Not just about their looks but also about their new chapter in life.

Beauty is viewed in a different way now as it merges with health and wellbeing. If you're in your 50's or 60's you'll be laughing as you reminisce at the crazy beauty trends we lived through.

  • Skinny eyebrows

  • Glued on lashes

  • Face powder

  • Deep tanned skin

  • Small bum

  • Perms

In a new survey of 1000 British women aged 60 - 69, 66% said they feel confident in their appearance more now than when they were younger. I have to admit I've found my appearance confidence in my late fifties.

Like many women in their twenties in the 80's, we had the bodies and didn't need much make up. What kept me from being confident was the barrage of skinny models in the newspapers, magazines and on television sporting the latest fashions perfectly. I also didn't have a big enough income to indulge back then.

In my thirties it was all about marriage, children and work so I didn't have the time or money to have my nails done and 'mom wear' was my uniform, In my forties I was getting over cancer, rebuilding a career and guiding my children into further education. I had the funds to indulge but no time spare. Then came my fifties and along with it came the menopause, my husbands death and Covid-19 and suddenly I had the freedom to do those things I used to love - and almost forgot - such as:

  • Lying on the sofa reading for hours on Sundays

  • Having more than two glasses of wine sometimes

  • Starting a new beauty/aesthetics clinic

  • Not being ashamed of my body

  • Wearing things I love instead of following fashion

  • Not panicking if my grey roots showed

  • Knowing that I really do have oodles of experience

  • Finally realising that men love confident women

Now recent research tells us that those UK women now in their 60's feel more secure in themselves. Out of the 1000 participants in the survey 59% said they feel they can again make their own choices in life and attain targets they set themselves.

Those women in their 70's in the UK are the second most confident group. Around 1 in 3 women in the survey claim that they feel more confident within themselves as they grow older.

This survey also showed that British women are most inspired by older celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston at 53 and Dame Helen Mirren at 77.

I am now 58 but until it's pointed out to me I forget how old I am as I feel as if I'm still in my forties but powered by confidence in who I am now.

I'd love to hear from you about your confidence level at your age. Are you appearance confident? Are you older than people think you are? How old do you feel? Is your confidence solid or determined by others? What makes you confident?
