Things You Should Know About Our Skin Peels

Writer's picture: We Love BeautyWe Love Beauty

Many of our clients enjoy a microneedling facial every 6 weeks to continue the skin boost it gives to their complexion. It also targets skin problems like rosacea, scarring, acne, pigmentation and signs of ageing.

We use skin peels during the micro needling treatments. Here’s what peels do.

  1. Remove a controlled amount of skin cells from the epidermis (top layer of skin) by using acids to exfoliate the skin. A stronger peel may also remove a small part of the dermis (just under the epidermis). The epidermis deeper layer contains nerve endings, sweat glands, and hair follicles.

  2. When this is done correctly, a peel causes micro damage to the skin and the skin starts to heal bringing collagen and elastin back to the area treated.

  3. Reduces the appearance of pigmentation, acne, scarring, wrinkles and sun damage. It also helps with blocked skin eg: blackheads, and refines and reduces pores and broken capillaries.

All our facials start with a good cleanse to remove all make-up and debris. We use dermaceuticals for all our treatments and for cleaning we use Tri Phase Cleanser which is massaged into the skin for one minute before removing it.

We use varied other dermaceuticals eg: Micro Derm Exfoliant to exfoliate the skin if needed. Once that is removed we microneedle to create micro channels in the skin.

We apply the chemical peel – UBER PRO – with a fan peel brush. We start at the forehead, across the cheeks and nose working downwards to the chin and if needed, onto the neck area. We don’t use it on eye areas, ears or lips.

It tingles and makes the skin pink and frosting for 2 – 3 minutes. If it’s uncomfortable we fan the skin. When it reduces we neutralise with a Hyla Active Sculptured mask that stays on the skin for 15 – 30 minutes.

The next step is an application of Brite Lite to inhibit melanin production.

Vitamin Rich Repair is massaged into the treated skin and for the finishing touch we apply a coloured SPF30 or sheer cover recover over the face, neck and chest area if treated. Cover Recover comes in a range of shades and we use it as our clients can keep it on all day and even over night after the treatment.

You will walk out of the treatment with glowing and healthy looking skin and it will continue to improve.

Three types of chemical peels

Chemical peels are named based on how deeply they exfoliate the skin:

  • superficial peels

  • medium-depth peels

  • deep peels

We consult with the clients for information about their skin before we decide which depth of peel is needed. Choice is dependent on the type and shade of a person’s skin and what issue they are hoping to address.

Superficial peels

We recommend superficial peels if skin issues only affect the top layer of the skin, the epidermis.

A superficial peels doesn’t penetrate the deeper skin layers so they carry a low risk of side effects and the skin should recover more quickly. These peels need around a week to heal properly and we urge clients to wear a 30SPF daily through the week and beyond to maintain.

Superficial peels are the gentlest type so we recommend it is repeated around every 6 weeks or more frequently if needed.

Medium-depth peels

A medium-depth peel is to help with:

A medium deep peel can take two weeks to heal. UBER MD is a medical strength peel which is used to enhance micro needling scars, deep wrinkles and heavily pigmented spots. It is used as line peeling i.e. focused on the problematic area only.

They can cause swelling that worsens for 48 hours after the treatment. It is also important to avoid sun exposure during the recovery time. Clients can wear makeup after 5–7 days but must avoid total sun exposure until the skin heals fully.

Deep peels

We don’t offer deep chemical peels. For issues affecting the deeper layers, we use diode laser therapy or superficial HIFU treatments on the face, neck and chest.

However, another practitioner may recommend a deep peel if a person has:

  • moderate to severe sun damage

  • moderate to severe wrinkles

  • moderate to severe hyperpigmentation

What’s In The Peels?

The chemical peels we use are in conjunction with micro needling treatments.

UBER Pro contains: L-Mandelic Acid, Alcohol Denat, water, Resorcinol, Dimethyl Isosorbide, Pyruvic Acid, Lactic acid, Niacinamide, Kojic Acid, Retinal, Sodium Hyaluronate, Copper tripeptide-1/Bis (Tripeptide-1) Copper Acetate, Glycerin, Caprylyl glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Ferulic Acid, Hydroxypropyl Cellulose.

  • Alpha-hydroxy acids: Some examples include glycolic acid, lactic acid, and citric acid. At-home exfoliating treatments often contain these acids.

  • Beta-hydroxy acids: Salicylic acid is one example, and it is especially beneficial for acne-prone skin and enlarged pores.

  • Mandelic acid is a type of gentle alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). It helps reduce acne, fine lines, and wrinkles and improve the appearance of uneven skin. As a person ages, skin renewal slows down, causing the skin to lose elasticity, discolour, and develop fine lines and wrinkles

  • Alcohol Denat has several benefits: great solvent, penetration enhancer, creates cosmetically elegant, light formulas, great astringent and antimicrobial.

  • Resorcinol is used as an antiseptic and disinfectant in topical pharmaceutical products in the treatment of skin disorders and infections such as acne, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, corns, calluses, and warts.

  • Dimethyl Isosorbide boosts the performance and enhance the delivery of active ingredients in a formula

  • Pyruvic Acid has the ability to stimulate collagen building, and formation of elastic fibers.

  • Kojic Acid blocks tyrosine from forming, which then prevents melanin production. Decreased melanin production may have a lightening effect on the skin.

  • Retinal is the closest thing you can get to prescription-strength vitamin A

  • Sodium Hyaluronate - used for anti-aging and moisturizing because of its ability to improve firmness levels, smooth out fine lines, and hydrate the skin.

  • Copper tripeptide-1/Bis (Tripeptide-1) Copper Acetate - clinically proven to stimulate the synthesis of collagen in skin fibroblasts, and increase accumulation of total proteins, glycsaminoglycans and DNA in dermal wounds.

  • Caprylyl glycol - it helps hydrate your skin

  • Ferulic Acid As an antioxidant, it fights free radicals and may slow the aging process at the cellular level.

  • Hydroxypropyl Cellulose - used in skin care as a film-forming substance, binding agent, emulsion stabilizer and texture enhancer.

Some chemicals in peels cause the skin to develop a white coating, which the dermatologist may refer to as “frosting.” Frosting signals the end-stage of a peel. Its presence and extent helps the doctor tell whether the peel has been sufficiently effective. Side effects

The side effects of a chemical peel can be mild but sometimes a client may experience:

  • redness that lasts for months

  • temporary dark patches of skin

  • permanently lightened patches of skin

  • scarring

The best way to avoid these is to have it done by a fully trained and experienced therapist ensure you follow their aftercare instructions carefully.

We use the Fitzpatrick scale when deciding to use a chemical peel for a client. This scale classifies skin by six types:

  1. white skin that always burns and never tans

  2. white skin that usually burns and does not tan easily

  3. darker white skin that may burn slightly and tans

  4. moderate brown skin that rarely burns and tans easily

  5. darker brown skin that very rarely burns and tans very easily

  6. black skin that does not burn and tans very easily.

We use more superficial peels so it’s rare a client will experience any side effects.
